Founded by Danish brewer and art collector Carl Jacobsen in 1888, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, popularly known as Glyptoteket, is an art museum made up of three ornate wings wrapped around a central courtyard. Home to more than 10,000 works, many from Jacobsen’s personal collection, the collection spans the millennia: from the sculpture and statuary of the Greek, Roman and Egyptian empires to Danish and French artworks of the 19th and 20th centuries—including masterpieces by Rodin and Matisse. No visit to Glyptoteket is complete without a moment of repose under the overhanging palms of the Winter Garden—so called because it is protected from the elements by its glass cupola.
