The Hotel Chelsea is deeply rooted in the folklore of New York City. Famous former tenants of the 12-story Victorian Gothic building include Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, Charles Bukowski, Leonard Cohen and Stanley Kubrick, who established the hotel as an enclave of bohemia; a place to write, compose, paint—and party. Today, after years of closure and a major refurbishment, the 138-year-old hotel has been reborn. The rooms, which range in size from petite queens to a deluxe two-bedroom pied-à-terre, now have modern conveniences tastefully integrated into the elegant, old-world interiors, and original features, such as wrought iron balconies, marble fireplaces, and stained glass, have been carefully restored. On the ground floor, Spanish restaurant (and Patti Smith’s old haunt) El Quijote has been revived, and cocktails and small plates are available in the Lobby Bar.
