The Petal

The detailed and delicate venation embodies a recurring motif in the publication’s message: That there is as much beauty to be found in a single plant as there is in an elaborate garden.

Spring Flowers

This elegant flower arrangement was originally photographed by Kinfolk art director Staffan Sundström for The Kinfolk Garden. The arrangement was carefully styled by Californian floral designer Lauren Boudreau and features two springtime flowers — yellow ranunculus and blue grape hyacinth — positioned on an Ikebana kenzan.

Things Fall Apart #2

Love’s a well-learned pas de deux. Photographer Pelle Crépin and stylist David Nolan collaborated on the fashion editorial “Things Fall Apart” in Kinfolk’s Winter 2019 Issue, which explored the subject of intimacy. Shot in a studio in London, the series was conceived of as a portrayal of the intricacies of romantic relationships: In this particular image, models Abdou and Webster demonstrate the feeling of remaining intertwined even as we drift apart.

Kinfolk’s Winter 2019 Issue explored intimacy and the balance between our contradictory cravings for both secure and stable relationships and the freedom to follow our hearts, our sexual desires and our need to be whole without the help of another. Working with this concept, photographer Pelle Crépin and stylist David Nolan created “Things Fall Apart”—a fashion editorial portraying love as a dance. The push and pull between models Abdou and Webster demonstrate how, even when the feelings fade, the “steps” of a relationship still feel familiar.

Dorte Tuladhar is a fine art photographer based in Copenhagen who specializes in equestrian portraiture. By working with horses for so long, she has developed a rare ability to see the rhythms and patterns that give the animals she photographs such sculptural grace. In Kinfolk’s Summer 2018 issue, her image of the elegant curve of a race horse’s neck illustrated an editorial on the medical mystery of phantom limb syndrome.

Spot The Difference

Aaron Tilley is a London-based still life photographer whose concept-driven, playful and highly technical images are a cornerstone of Kinfolk’s editorial identity. For Kinfolk’s Fall 2019 issue, which was themed around education, Tilley teamed up with stylist Lisa Jahovic to bring a modern twist to traditional picture riddles. In these side-by-side images, the viewer is invited to spot the difference between two apparently similar abstract arrangements.
